According to World News and Reuters, Toshiba has announced that it is planning an exit strategy from the hi-definition DVD format war after hard-hitting news came out that Warner Brothers, Wal-mart, Netflix, and a host of others are going to go with Blu-ray technology.
I really wonder how Sony pulled that one off. They must have had insiders placed in strategic positions within those companies. I say that because HD-DVD had less capacity but utilized it fully while Blu-ray held several times more information but no one is utilizing it. That means, you will see a gradual implementation of new features and “re-releases” of your favorite titles over the next few years. So, if you buy “300 – Special Edition” -for instance- you’ll soon discover it to be released again as “300 – Platinum Edition” or something along those lines. Then, a few months later, we’ll probably see “300 – Ultimate Edition.”
At any rate, I guess it really doesn’t matter to most people and it is probably a good thing moving forward to simply have the market moving in a single direction. So now, manufacturers can focus their efforts and lower the prices of Blu-ray discs and players.
I, for one, am a little miffed because I had a nice collection of HD-DVD movies that looked incredible -even though I saved a ton and simply bought the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360. Now, I suppose the player and the HD-DVD’s will all get thrown in to a box at some point –only once those titles are released on Blu-ray and once the players come way down in price.
